Five rare tigers found in Sumatra

ive rare tigers, long thought to be extinct in South Asia, have been discovered in an unexplored valley in central Sumatra. The tigers, believed to be part of a larger family, have been immediately placed under a permanent protection order by Sumatran President Mr Akbar Aziz. The army's elite Jungle Unit is expected to be instructed to provide practical protection.

The dramatic find takes to almost 60 the worldwide number of known tigers identified in the wild. About 20 are being monitored in Siberia and another 32 in South India.

Mr Aziz has moved quickly to implement a UN Species Preservation Agency (UNSPA) "Green Order" protection directive on the tigers, making it a severe offence to hinder or harm the tigers in any way. Penalties range up to 25 years imprisonment.

The move follows a valuation by the UNSPA of $US2.8b per tiger. (In 2314 San Diego Zoo, backed by the Getty Foundation, paid $3.2b for a single Siberian tiger.) The waiting list for one hour tickets (at $1800 each) to view a tiger at the zoo are sold out for the next three years.

But more importantly, the discovery means that fresh genetic stock can potentially be added to the limited DNA currently available amongst cloned tigers, estimated at around 600 worldwide.
