headline - vulcan generator erupts

a

volcano generator well (VGW) has exceeded critical mass and begun erupting, threatening the safety of Buenos Aires. The eruption, in one of the ten largest VGWs in existence, has already reached 3.8 KR (A KR of ten is equal to the benchmark eruption of Krakatoa).

The massive series of explosions has sent temperatures soaring into the thousands of degrees, with the plume of flames and smoke visible a hundred kilometers away. Local officials have commenced evacuating upwards of 200,000 people, with more expected to follow.

President of South America Lucille Cruz has issued a State of Emergency, which enables the mobilization of all South American security forces under the direction of the Secretary of Air, Pedro Alvarez. Secretary Alvarez has phoned Governor Druscillo of Brazil to direct deployment of specialist firefighters normally stationed in Sao Paulo.

President Cruz has also phoned US President Walter Cayley to discuss deployment of robotanks to help contain the spreading disaster. The newly developed robotanks can withstand very high temperatures, but have never previously been tested at temperatures of this magnitude.

The eruption of the VGW is expected to severely damage the nascent artificial volcano industry, already deeply plagued by technical problems and cost overruns. However, popular support remains high for this relatively clean source of power.

The disaster will cause major disruption to power supply in mid South America. It is feared that temporary shutdowns of similar generators world wide could impact negatively on the global economy.

A spokesperson for the London Center for Volcanics has warned that the eruption could peak above 5 KR, based on seismological surveys carried out in South America by the Center back in mid 2141. The eruption has highlighted the difficulties of controlling such a volatile power source.

Anne Cossimo, CEO of Anglo American Volcanics, manufacturer of the vulcan generator, is expected to arrive in Buenos Aires later tonight. In a statement, Ms Cossimo said that every effort would be made to prevent injury to residents of the Buenos Aires region andd ttto[[[[//...
